Difference Between Dry Type And Oil Type Transformer

The differences between dry type and oil type transformers are mainly in appearance, lead form, capacity voltage, insulation and heat dissipation, applicable places, cost and other aspects.

►From the naming of transformers, we can know that the biggest difference between oil transformers and dry transformers is whether there is oil. Oil-type transformers need a shell to wrap the oil, and the oil soaks the coil of the transformer. Therefore, the oil transformer has a shell, and the coil of the transformer cannot be seen from the outside. The dry transformer does not need a shell without oil, and we can directly see the coil of the transformer.

►In addition, the cooling medium of dry and oil types is also different. The oil type uses transformer oil as the cooling and insulation medium, while the dry type uses air and other gases as the cooling medium. Due to the need for fire protection, oil-immersed transformers are generally installed in separate transformer rooms or outdoors. Dry transformers are suitable for some indoor places, such as shopping malls, high-rise buildings, etc.

►In terms of capacity, the capacity of dry transformers is smaller than that of oil transformers. The manufacturing process of dry transformer is more complicated than that of oil transformer with the same voltage level and capacity, so the cost will be higher. Due to the environmental protection, flame retardancy and impact resistance of dry transformer, it is often used in high-demand power supply and distribution places such as indoors.

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Dry And Oil Transformers

From the above, dry type and oil type transformer each have their own advantages and disadvantages. Oil transformer has low cost, wide capacity range and convenient maintenance, but it is flammable and explosive. Dry transformer has good environmental protection performance and good fire resistance. It can be used indoors, but the cost is relatively high.
